Congratulations on my heritage.

1.
BC: So, Florence, someone in the department told me you were from Vietnam.
Me: Me? From Vietnam?
BC: You're not?
Me: No, I'm from Taiwan.
BC: Well, they apparently told me the wrong country. I'm sorry.
Me: Haha... It's alright!

2.
(At a bar)
Guy: Are you Japanese?
Me: Nope. :)
Guy: Chinese?
Me: Uh huh, I'm from Taiwan.
Guy: Taiwan!
Me: Yup. Do you know Taiwan? It's a small island close to China.
Guy: Yeah, I know Taiwan. Taiwan is good! A lot of my electronic devices are made in Taiwan.
Me: Hehe, yeah, that's the Taiwan I'm from.
Guy: Congratulations... (Sticks out hand, wanting to shake hands.)
Me: ???
Guy: ... on your heritage. Taiwan is good!
Me: Oh, thank you! (Shakes the guy's hand. Thinks.) Congratulations on my heritage??? Quite amusing.

3.
DC: I don't know. You do look a bit Viet-Thai to me.
SC: You know why? Because you dress like Vietnamese.
Me: Do I?
RC: No, that's Taiwanese style! And a little bit French.
SC: Hey, Vietnam was ruled by France.
JH: She dresses in a unique personal style.
RC: Yeah, she has her own style.
DC: Like Asian-Bohemian?
Me: Ah, Asian-Bohemian! That's my favorite so far.

  1. i do agree a bit with the asian-bohemian thing.

I had this identity crisis when people all around me at the conference (composed primarily of Koreans) didn't think was Chinese...or Asian for that matter....I'll have to cut them some slack, though. My hair was dyed.
